At Ladels Day Nursery, we are committed to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of every child.

We understand that some children may have allergies that require careful management to prevent allergic reactions.

This policy outlines our procedures to:

  • reduce risk
  • ensure staff preparedness, and
  • respond effectively to allergic incidents.

Aims

  • Minimise the risk of allergic reactions through robust procedures.
  • Ensure staff are trained, vigilant, and confident in responding to allergic reactions.
  • Work closely with parents and medical professionals to develop individual allergy plans.

Our Procedures

Identification and Planning

  • All staff receive training to recognise signs and symptoms of allergic reactions (mild rash, itchiness severe wheezing, anaphylaxis).
  • Parents provide allergy and dietary information during registration.
  • Parents must update the nursery immediately if new allergies/intolerances develop.
  • A comprehensive allergy risk assessment & care plan is created with parents and health professionals if needed.
  • An Allergy Register is maintained and displayed in key areas (e.g., kitchen, each room).

Food Preparation and Handling

  • Staff preparing food follow strict hygiene and cross-contamination procedures.
  • Dedicated equipment & allergen-free areas are used for allergic children’s meals.
  • Menus may be adapted in collaboration with parents.
  • Designated staff check every meal/snack to ensure it meets dietary needs.
  • Seating plans may be used to supervise children with allergies.
  • Staff raise allergy awareness with children (age appropriately).

Responding to Allergic Reactions

If a child has an allergic reaction:

  • A trained paediatric first aider responds immediately.
  • Emergency medication (e.g., EpiPen) is administered if prescribed.
  • Parents are contacted straight away.
  • The incident is logged in the Incident Book and Allergy Register.
  • At least two staff + the manager will have specialist training for children with treatment plans.
  • Witnessing children will be supported and reassured.

Emergency Response – Severe Reaction

  • Call 999 immediately (no private transport).
  • A trained staff member stays with the child until paramedics arrive.
  • Parents are notified straight away.

A familiar staff member accompanies the child to hospital with:

  • Medical records
  • Emergency medication
  • Comfort items
  • Staffing will be reorganised to maintain ratios.
  • Nursery Manager will report to Ofsted and update procedures.

Optional Transport (Non-Ambulance)

Only if parents have consented in writing

  • Proper child seats/restraints used
  • Vehicles roadworthy, insured safe
  • Staff escort provided
  • Emergency procedures pre-planned

Food Information Regulations (FIR) 2014

We comply with FIR by:

  • Displaying weekly menus with allergens clearly marked.
  • Ensuring staff follow guidance on the 14 named allergens.
  • Allergy Register kept up to date.
  • All incidents documented in the Incident Book.
  • Risk assessments reviewed after any reaction or medical changes.

Policy Review

This policy is reviewed annually with staff and parents and updated immediately after any:

  • serious incident
  • legislative changes
  • new medical advice
