At Ladels Day Nursery, we believe food can provide rich learning opportunities when used thoughtfully in play. We ensure that any food-based activities are safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate, always prioritising children’s health, wellbeing, and enjoyment.
Purpose of this Policy
Safety and Inclusion Procedures
To keep children safe and included during food play, we follow these procedures:
- Choking hazards are assessed and avoided at all times.
- Whole jelly cubes will never be used. If jelly is included in play, it will always be fully prepared with water as instructed by the manufacturer.
- Heat-treated flour is used (where appropriate) to minimise the risk of infection.
- Small items such as dried pasta or pulses are not used with younger children who may be at risk of choking.
- Allergies and intolerances are checked in advance, and activities are adapted to ensure every child can take part safely.
- Planning sheets clearly record food play activities, including allergen details, so staff and parents are fully informed.
- Allergy information is displayed for staff when setting up food activities to ensure all individual needs are met.
- Cooking and baking activities are checked beforehand to confirm all ingredients are safe for participating children.
- Food is only used in play when it meaningfully enhances children’s learning experiences. Wherever possible, dry food items are reused in other activities to reduce waste.
