At Ladels Day Nursery, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is our highest priority. All staff, students, volunteers, and visitors have a duty of care to ensure children are kept safe from harm, abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

We work in line with:

  • The Children Act 1989 & 2004
  • Working Together to Safeguard Children (2018, updated 2023)
  • Keeping Children Safe in Education (2024)
  • Local Safeguarding Children Partnership (LSCP) guidance

Recognising Abuse

Abuse can take many forms

  • Physical abuse
  • Emotional abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Neglect

Staff must be alert to signs such as:

  • Unexplained injuries, bruises, or burns
  • Changes in behaviour (withdrawn, anxious, aggressive)
  • Poor hygiene, hunger, or inappropriate clothing
  • Reluctance to go home

Procedures for Reporting Concerns

  1. Immediate Action: Report to DSL/Deputy DSL ‍
  2. Record: Complete a safeguarding concern form
  3. DSL Decision: DSL decides whether to:
  • Monitor internally
  • Refer to Children’s Social Care
  • Contact Police (999 in emergencies)
  • Croydon MASH (Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub): 020 8726 6400
  • Out of Hours: 020 8726 6400 (ask for Emergency Duty Team)

Allegations Against Staff

  • All allegations are reported to the Nursery Manager or DSL.
  • Allegations about the Manager ➝ report directly to the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO).

Staff may be suspended while investigations are carried out

Safer Recruitment

We ensure: 

  • Enhanced DBS checks
  • Two references checked
  • Two references checked

No unchecked adult will ever be left unsupervised with children

Whistleblowing

Staff have a duty to report poor practice or concerns:

  • Internal: Speak with DSL/Manager
  • External: Ofsted 0300 123 1231

You will be supported and protected if you raise a concern in good faith.

Working with Parents

We are committed to open and honest communication:

  • Safeguarding concerns may be shared with parents where appropriate
  • In cases where parental involvement may place a child at risk, advice will be sought from Social Care

Online Safety

  • Children will be protected from inappropriate online content
  • Staff will follow the Acceptable Use Policy
  • Mobile phones/cameras are restricted in rooms
