At Ladels Day Nursery, the safety, wellbeing, and development of our children are our top priority.

This policy ensures all staff behave in an appropriate, professional manner and act as positive role models for children.

It also outlines how staff behaviour is monitored, supported, and managed to maintain a safe and caring environment.

Expected Staff Behaviour

All staff are expected to:

  • Put children first — their safety, welfare, and development always come before anything else.
  • Behave professionally and be caring, positive role models.
  • Work as part of the wider nursery team.
  • Understand and follow the EYFS Statutory Framework and all nursery policies.
  • Respond quickly and correctly to any safeguarding concerns.
  • Keep all information about children, families, and the nursery confidential.
  • Maintain the public image of the nursery and not bring it into disrepute.
  • Keep relationships with parents professional. Pre-existing friendships or family links must be declared and managed with the support of management.
  • Follow our Mobile Phone & Electronic Device Policy and Social Networking Policy.
  • Report to management immediately if there are personal changes that may affect their ability to work with children (e.g. police records, medication, social services involvement).

Monitoring Staff Behaviour

We ensure staff suitability through:

  • Regular peer observations of staff–child interactions.
  • Scheduled supervisions and appraisals to monitor performance and wellbeing.
  • A Whistleblowing Policy that allows staff to raise concerns confidentially.
  • Ongoing suitability checks in staff contracts requiring staff to report changes in circumstances immediately.
  • Robust Safer Recruitment Policy checks for all new staff.

Behaviours That May Cause Concern

The following behaviours will be taken seriously and investigated:

  • Sudden changes in mood or behaviour.
  • Extreme or sudden changes in religious/cultural beliefs (possible radicalisation concerns).
  • Changes in relationships with children or staff (e.g. isolation, over-friendliness, agitation).
  • Sudden outbursts or becoming withdrawn.
  • Secretive behaviour.
  • Frequent lateness, sickness, or missed shifts.
  • Declining work standards.
  • Extreme or unexplained changes in appearance.

Procedures to Be Followed

If a concern about staff behaviour arises:

  1. An immediate meeting will be held with the staff member and management.
  2. Support will be offered where appropriate (e.g. wellbeing support, adjustments).
  3. If the behaviour raises concerns for child safety or welfare, the Safeguarding Children & Child Protection Policy will be followed.
  4. If an allegation is made against a staff member, the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) will be contacted immediately.

All meetings, observations, and outcomes will be confidentially logged
